Wi-Fi QR Code Generator
Make a QR code that connects phones to your Wi-Fi in one scan, created in your browser so the password never leaves your device.
Create a Wi-Fi QR Code
Reading out a long Wi-Fi password to every guest gets old fast. A Wi-Fi QR code stores the network name, password and security type in a standard format that phones understand: point the camera, tap the notification and you are connected.
This page opens the QR Code Generator with the Wi-Fi network type selected. Because the code is built in your browser, the password is never transmitted anywhere, which is not true of every online QR service.
What is inside the code
A Wi-Fi QR code contains a short text string such as WIFI:T:WPA;S:HomeNet;P:correct horse;;. T is the security type, S the network name, P the password and an optional H:true marks a hidden network. Special characters in the name or password are escaped with a backslash, which the generator does for you.
Choosing the security type
| Router setting | Choose |
|---|---|
| WPA2-Personal, WPA3-Personal or mixed WPA2/WPA3 | WPA/WPA2/WPA3 |
| WEP (outdated; consider upgrading) | WEP |
| No password | Open (no password) |
Enterprise networks that ask for a username as well as a password (802.1X) cannot be joined with this simple format.
Printing tips
- Print the code at least 2 to 3 cm (about an inch) wide; larger if it will be scanned from a distance.
- Keep strong contrast, dark on light, and keep the quiet zone around the code.
- Add a short line such as "Scan to join Wi-Fi" and the network name, so people know what it does.
- Use the SVG download for sharp results in a design program or at poster size.
- Test with at least one iPhone and one Android phone before laminating it.
For cafés, rentals and offices
A guest network with its own password is the tidy option: you can change that password without affecting your own devices, then print a new code. The same generator also makes contact card QR codes for a reception desk or a business card.
