Free Online PDF Tools That Keep Your Files on Your Device

PDF is how documents travel: contracts, invoices, bank statements, scans of IDs and certificates. That is exactly why uploading them to an unknown server to merge two files or remove a page is a poor trade. The PDF tools here do the work in your browser, so the document never leaves your device.

Quick links: merge PDF, split PDF, extract pages, delete pages, rotate PDF, PDF to JPG, PDF to PNG, PDF to text, reduce PDF size, compress PDF to 1 MB and compress PDF to 100 KB. For turning images into a PDF, see image to PDF, JPG to PDF and PNG to PDF in the image tools; for a PDF stored as text, Base64 to PDF.

Why in the browser

A PDF can be read and rewritten without a server. The tools here use pdf.js, the PDF engine inside Firefox, to draw page previews, and pdf-lib to write the new file. Both are open-source libraries that run as JavaScript on your device, which is why there is no upload wait, no file-size tier and no copy of your document on someone else's disk.

What changes and what does not

  • Pages are copied, not redrawn. When you merge, split or reorder, text stays selectable, fonts and images are not re-compressed, and each page keeps its own size. Only the converter draws pages as images, at the resolution you choose.
  • Compression changes pictures, not text. The compressor recompresses the images inside a PDF and leaves text and vector drawings as they are, unless you choose its Maximum mode, which turns pages into images.
  • Rotation is a page setting. Turning a page changes a number in the file, so it costs no quality.
  • The original is never touched. Every action produces a new file for you to download.
  • Document-wide extras are dropped. The bookmark list and interactive form fields do not carry over into the new file.

Protected PDFs

Files locked with a password or with restrictions against editing cannot be changed here. That is deliberate: working around a protection you did not set is not something a tool should do silently. If the file is yours, remove the protection in the program that created it and try again.

Tips

  • Number files before merging (01-, 02-, …) so they arrive in the right order.
  • Delete blank scan pages before you merge; the result is smaller and easier to read.
  • For a very large scan, use a computer rather than a phone: the whole file is held in memory while you work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my PDF files uploaded?
No. The files are read and written by your browser, so contracts, invoices and ID scans never leave your device.
Is there a watermark or a page limit?
No watermark and no page limit. Up to 20 files and 300 MB in total can be open at once, which is what a browser handles comfortably.
Can I edit a password-protected PDF?
No. A PDF with a password or edit restrictions cannot be changed here; remove the protection with the program that set it first.
Can I turn images into a PDF?
Yes, with the Image Converter: choose PDF as the output and it puts one or more images into a single PDF.
