Convert JPG to PNG Online

Sometimes a JPG simply has to be a PNG: an upload form accepts nothing else, a design tool handles PNG layers better, or you plan to edit a picture repeatedly and do not want every save to add another round of JPG compression. This page opens the Image Converter with PNG selected and does the whole job inside your browser.

What the conversion does and does not do

  • It stops further loss. Every later save of the PNG keeps the pixels exactly as they are.
  • It does not restore detail. Blockiness or blur already baked into the JPG stays in the PNG.
  • It does not add transparency. The background stays whatever colour it was in the photo.
  • It usually makes the file bigger. That is the price of lossless storage.

Good reasons to convert

SituationWhy PNG helps
A site or app only accepts PNGCompatibility is the whole point
You will crop, annotate and re-save several timesNo extra JPG artefacts accumulate
You are adding text or shapes on topCrisp edges survive in the final file
The image goes into a slide deck or document template that expects PNGConsistent handling across tools

If your goal is a smaller file for a website rather than compatibility, convert JPG to WebP instead; it keeps photos light while looking the same.

Resizing on the way

Because PNG files from photos grow large quickly, it often makes sense to reduce the dimensions while converting. Choose a maximum width or height, or scale by a percentage, and the PNG is written at the new size. Camera orientation is applied first, so upright photos stay upright, and EXIF metadata such as GPS location is left out of the new file.

Private by design

Your photos never leave the device: they are decoded and re-encoded with the canvas APIs built into the browser, and a batch download is zipped inside the page. You can go the other way with PNG to JPG, or turn web images into PNG with WebP to PNG.
