Convert JSON to CSV Online

APIs and databases hand out JSON, but the people who need the data often live in spreadsheets. Turning a JSON array into CSV makes it something anyone can open, sort, filter and chart. This page is the JSON Converter with JSON in and CSV out.

The file is converted in your browser, so an export of orders or users never passes through another server.

From objects to rows

Each object in the array becomes one row, and each field becomes a column. A single object, rather than an array, becomes a one-row table. An array of arrays is treated as rows already, so it is written out as it is.

Flattening nested fields

JSONCSV columns
{"address": {"city": "Paris"} }address.city
{"tags": ["a", "b"]}tags.0, tags.1
{"meta": {} }meta, left empty

Dotted names make the round trip possible: CSV to JSON with Nest dotted column names ticked rebuilds the nested objects from them.

Quoting and escaping

A value that contains the delimiter, a double quote or a line break is wrapped in quotes, and any quote inside it is doubled, as RFC 4180 describes. That is what keeps "Doe, Jane" in one cell instead of splitting it across two. Lines end with CRLF, which every spreadsheet reads.

Opening the file in Excel

  • Comma or semicolon: Excel uses the list separator of your region; if everything lands in column A, convert again with semicolon.
  • Leading zeros: Excel turns 007 into 7 on opening. Use Data, From Text/CSV and set that column to Text to keep them.
  • Google Sheets: File, Import, Upload detects the delimiter by itself.
