Count Characters Online
Titles, descriptions, posts, form fields and messages all have length limits, and going over one means a cut-off sentence or a rejected submission. This page is the Word Counter, which shows the character count with and without spaces as you type, together with the limits you are most likely to need.
Common character limits
| Where | Limit |
|---|---|
| Page title in search results | About 60 |
| Meta description | About 155 to 160 |
| SMS (basic alphabet) | 160 |
| SMS with emoji or non-Latin letters | 70 |
Search results cut titles and descriptions by width in pixels, so a title of wide letters is cut sooner than one of narrow letters. Keep the important words at the start.
Characters, bytes and code points
A character as you see it is not always one unit for a computer. An accented letter can be stored as a letter plus an accent, and many emoji are several code points joined together. This counter counts what you see, which matches what most people mean. Databases and APIs sometimes limit bytes instead: in UTF-8, English letters take one byte, most accented and non-Latin letters two or three, and emoji four.
