Compress an Image to 100 KB
Bring a photo, a scan or a signature under 100 KB for an application form, without guessing a quality setting.
Compress an Image to 100 KB
Government portals, job applications and exam registrations often cap uploads at 100 KB, sometimes for a photo, sometimes for a scanned signature or document. This page opens the Image Converter with To a target size set to 95 KB and Same as input as the format, so you only need to drop the file and press Convert.
Why the target says 95
Kilobytes are counted two ways. This tool, like Windows, uses 1024 bytes, so its 100 KB means 102,400 bytes; many websites use 1,000, and their 100 KB means 100,000 bytes. A file the tool shows as 99 KB is more than 101,000 bytes and fails such a form. Aiming for 95 KB, which is 97,280 bytes, clears both definitions with room to spare.
What happens to your image
| Input | What the tool changes to reach 95 KB |
|---|---|
| JPG photo | Lowers the JPG quality until the file fits; the dimensions stay unless even the lowest quality is too large |
| WebP image | The same, in WebP |
| PNG scan or screenshot | Reduces the pixel dimensions, because PNG has no quality setting |
| GIF, BMP, AVIF or SVG | Saves it as PNG first, then reduces the dimensions |
Getting a sharper result
The fewer pixels a file has to carry, the higher the quality it can keep. A large phone photo squeezed straight to 100 KB has to give up a lot of quality; resized to 1200 pixels wide first, it fits at a much higher one. Add a Max width resize rule before converting, or crop to the exact dimensions the form lists with Exact size, cropped.
Scanned signatures and documents
For a signature or a text document, JPG is usually the right output even when the scan came as PNG: set the output format to JPG and keep the target at 95 KB, and the page keeps its full size instead of shrinking. A transparent background becomes white, which is what most forms expect. Check that small text is still readable before you submit; if it is not, crop the empty margins off the scan before converting, so the pixels go to the writing. Keep PNG only when the form demands it, and then the tool can reach the limit only by reducing the dimensions.
