QR Code Reader - Scan a QR Code from an Image, a Screenshot or the Camera

Read a QR code without installing an app: drop a photo of it, paste a screenshot, or point your camera at it. The content is shown in full, and the common kinds are laid out field by field, so a Wi-Fi code shows the network name and password, and a contact shows the name, phone and email.

It is especially handy when the code is on the screen you are using, in an email, a PDF or a message, where a phone camera cannot help. Everything runs in your browser: images and camera frames are read on your device and never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Drop an image on the box or click it to choose one.
  2. Or copy a screenshot and press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac) anywhere on the page.
  3. Or press Scan with camera, allow camera access and hold the code in view.
  4. Read the result and use Copy, Open link or Copy password.

Anything else is shown as plain text, exactly as stored in the code.

Check a link before you open it

The reader never opens a link by itself. It shows the website name first, because QR codes are an easy way to hide a fake address: stickers with a look-alike payment page are placed over real codes on parking meters, posters and restaurant tables. Compare the name with the one you expect before pressing Open link.

When a code cannot be read

  • Blurred or tiny codes: use a sharper photo, or crop the image closer around the code.
  • Codes cut off at the edge: all three large corner squares must be visible.
  • Light codes on a dark background are read too; very low contrast, such as grey on grey, may not be.
  • Only QR codes are read, not barcodes such as EAN on products, and one code per image.

Camera and privacy

The camera is used only after you press Scan with camera and the browser asks for your permission. Frames are checked a few times a second in your browser, nothing is recorded, and the camera turns off as soon as a code is found or you press Stop camera.
