JPG to WebP Converter
Convert JPG photos to WebP for lighter, faster web pages, with the quality under your control and nothing uploaded.
Convert JPG to WebP Online
Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page, and most of them are still JPG. Re-encoding those photos as WebP typically cuts their size noticeably without any visible difference, which speeds up loading on mobile connections and helps Largest Contentful Paint.
This page opens the Image Converter with WebP selected. Photos are converted in your browser and never uploaded.
Resize first, then compress
The biggest saving rarely comes from the format alone. A photo straight from a phone is often 4000 pixels wide but shown at 1200 on a page. Setting a maximum width while converting removes pixels nobody will see, and the WebP compression then works on a much smaller image. Combining the two regularly turns a multi-megabyte photo into a file of a few hundred kilobytes.
Quality settings for photos
| Quality | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 85–90 | Portfolio and product photos where fine detail matters |
| 75–85 | Blog images, hero banners and general web content |
| 60–75 | Thumbnails, previews and background images |
Because the input is already a compressed JPG, pushing the WebP quality to 100 does not bring back detail; it only makes the file bigger. Compare a couple of settings and keep the smallest one that looks right.
Using the WebP files
- Upload them to your CMS or static site in place of the JPGs.
- For very old browsers, use a
pictureelement with the WebP assourceand the JPG as a fallbackimg. - EXIF metadata, including GPS location, is not copied, which also trims a few kilobytes.
Browser note and related conversions
Chrome, Edge and Firefox can create WebP files; Safari can display WebP but cannot encode it, so run this conversion in one of the other browsers on a computer or Android phone. On iPhone and iPad every browser uses the Safari engine, so none of them can create WebP. For PNG graphics with transparency, use PNG to WebP; to turn WebP images back into JPG for older software, use WebP to JPG.
