Generate a URL Slug from a Title

The slug is the readable part of a web address that identifies a page, such as /blog/how-to-bake-bread. Content management systems generate one from the title, but they often keep stop words, accents or odd punctuation, and many tools such as static site generators and custom CMSs leave it to you. This page opens the Case Converter with the slug result first.

What the generator does

TitleSlug
How to Bake Bread at Homehow-to-bake-bread-at-home
Crème brûlée: 5 Tips!creme-brulee-5-tips
Straße & Co.strasse-co

Accents are removed, the text is lowercased, and every run of spaces and punctuation becomes one hyphen, with no hyphen left at either end.

Tips for better slugs

  • Shorten it by deleting filler words from the result if the title is long; three to five words is plenty.
  • Leave dates out unless the page is really tied to one, so the address still fits after an update.
  • Do not change a published slug without a redirect from the old address, or links and rankings break.

To encode a whole address rather than build a slug, use the URL encoder. For file names and code identifiers, the Case Converter also gives kebab-case and snake_case.
